Event Description
The Canadian Youth Chess Championship is Canada’s largest youth chess event! The players are split into 12 sections based on age and gender. The top 3 finishers in each section qualify for:
- World Youth Chess Championship (WYCC) and World Cadet Chess Championship (WCCC)
- Pan American Youth Chess Championship
- North American Youth Chess Championship
The champions of each of the age category sections get the opportunity to represent Canada at world events. The Chess Federation of Canada (CFC) provides limited sponsorship to winners. Click on the link below to learn more about the world events and CFC sponsorship.
Note: The sponsorship to play in the WYCC or WCCC is the responsibility of the Chess Federation of Canada (CFC). As a result, the organizer or Elevate My Chess bears no responsibilities for this.

Note: There is a $10 siblings discount code. You get an additional $10 for each additional sibling registered. To get the code, register for the first child, then send an email to info@elevatemychess.com to get discount code for the additional siblings. Include the first and last name, section, and CFC ID of the additional siblings.
Registration closes on June 30, 2020.
For any registration requests coming after this date, minimum registration fee is $350. In addition, a surcharge will be levied and a half-point bye in Round 1 may be given at the sole discretion of the organizer.
Players need to have a valid CFC or FQE membership or purchase it prior to the start of the tournament.
$150 of each entry is remitted back to the Chess Federation of Canada to sponsor the winners of this event.

Sections
There are twelve (12) sections in this tournament, by FIDE age category and gender. The age cut-off date is January 01, 2020. Thus, this is how different birth years determine the section placement (please check that your child is registered in the proper one!)
As per the CFC Handbook Art. 702, “When there are less than eight players for any category, then one or more categories shall be combined so that there are no less than 8 players in the combined category. Where the shortfall occurs in the girls U18, it is recommended that this section be combined with the girls U16.”
CFC policy on “playing up” in another section of the CYCC as articulated by then CFC Youth Coordinator Patrick McDonald February 2012:
“If someone wants to play in an age category older than the one they qualify for, they can do so.”
BUT: if they win a spot in a certain age category to play at the WYCC, that is the age category that we are willing to send them to the WYCC in.
IE: if one player who is 9 years old, wishes to play in the U14 section at the CYCC, and if they win a spot to go to the WYCC, the only age category that Canada will send them to the WYCC in is the U14 section.
The same would go for girls that would like to play in the open section for their age group (or older) … if a girl plays in the open section and wins a spot to go to the WYCC, then the only section that Canada will send them to the WYCC in is the section that they qualified in at the CYCC.”

Normally, CYCC participants qualify by placing better than half their peers in a qualifying tournament. However, there are other qualification methods. For questions, or if there are no upcoming qualifiers in your area, please contact us directly, cycc@elevatemychess.com.
Note: You can register early to take advantage of EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION FEES prior to qualifying. However, if you’re unable to qualify prior to the start of the tournament, you may be eligible for a full refund subject to a 5% processing fee.

Time Control/ Format/Byes
90 min / end + 30 second increment starting with Move 1 in all sections.
Format: Regular Swiss, seven (7) rounds.
There are no half-point byes at this event. A player can request bye during registration, however, all byes will be zero point byes. If you did not request bye during registration, you must notify the organizer in writing before July 01, 2020. Any “byes” requested after July 01, and especially during the tournament may be considered a forfeit.

Refund Policy
There will be NO cash refunds after June 1, 2020. Prior to this date, full refund less a 5% administrative charge will be provided following a written notification to the organizer by email. At the sole discretion of the organizer, consideration for 100% credit can be provided on a case by case basis after June 1, 2020. Credits are valid for one year from the date of issuance and can only be applied to future events organized or managed by Elevate My Chess Canada Inc., or its affiliated chess clubs.
Withdrawals
If a player wishes to withdraw from the tournament, the player has to communicate this request to an arbiter in writing no later than during the preceding round. Once pairings for the new round are made and published, they will not be changed. Any belated “withdrawal” request will result in a forfeit of the game for which the player has already been paired. The CFC may, in its sole discretion, rate such forfeited games.
Forfeit Time
If a player doesn’t arrive at his/her chessboard 60 minutes (i.e., one hour) after the start of a round, the player’s game will be forfeited, the result “0F” will be entered, and the player will not be paired for subsequent rounds.
